I spent the whole day yesterday messing with watches, trying to get a good deal on a Rolex Daytona, the two-tone one. You know, the one with both gold and steel. It’s a real looker, but man, are they pricey!

So, I started my hunt online. First I searched for “Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116503”. I saw a bunch of these pop up, and I clicked through some of them, I spent at least 20 minutes for this. The prices were all over the place, from like $17,599 to $55. What’s up with that? I guess some are used, some are new, and some are, well, let’s just say they’re not exactly “Rolex” Rolexes.

Then I went down the rabbit hole of “Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16523”. That’s an older model, I guess. Prices there were even crazier. I even saw one for $39.95 and $37, which is obviously not real. But then there was this one for $13 that was “used” but in “very good” condition. They even had pictures of it. Looked pretty legit, but who knows?

I also tried searching for “2022 MINT Rolex Daytona Cosmograph 116503 Black Two Tone Watch”. Because I thought, “Maybe I can get a newer one that’s not too beat up.” Found some of those too, but they were still pretty expensive.

While I was digging, I learned that the Daytona wasn’t even that popular at first. But now, it’s like, the watch to have. It has become very popular now! And some of the old ones, the “vintage” ones, are worth a ton. I even read about these new ones Rolex is making, with white gold and these fancy dials. They’re probably going to cost a fortune!

I did find some websites selling “Superclone” watches. I read them carefully, like, copies that are supposed to look just like the real thing. They had Submariners, Daytonas, Datejusts, all the big names. They even said these fakes had “Automatic Swiss movement” and “Sapphire glass.” Sounds fancy, but I’m not sure I trust it.

My Adventure

Here’s where I got creative. I decided to try to make my own “high imitation” Daytona, just for fun. I found an old watch I had lying around, one of those cheap ones with a metal band. It wasn’t two-tone, but I figured I could work with it.

  • First, I took the watch apart. I unscrewed the back, took out the battery, and carefully removed the hands and the face. It was a bit tricky, but I managed.
  • Next, I tried to make it look two-tone. I used some gold-colored paint I had and painted parts of the band and the case. It didn’t look perfect, but it kind of gave it that two-tone vibe.
  • Then, I printed out a picture of a real Daytona dial I found online. I cut it out carefully and glued it onto the old watch face. It was a bit too big, so I had to trim it down.
  • Finally, I put the whole thing back together. It was a bit of a mess, and the hands didn’t really move anymore, but it kind of looked like a Daytona, from far away.

I wore it around the house for a while, pretending I was some big shot. It was fun, but I definitely wouldn’t try to pass it off as real. It’s more like a “homage” to the Daytona, a tribute to my watch-hunting adventures.

So, that’s my story of trying to get a two-tone Daytona. I didn’t get a real one, but I had a good time messing around and learning about watches. Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on a real Rolex, but for now, my homemade “Daytona” will do just fine.
