Alright, let’s talk about this little project I got into with an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. You know, the classic one, just like the astronauts wore. The one I got is a spot-on copy, but with an open case back. A friend asked me to get one for him as a gift.
Getting Started
First thing I did was to track down where to find this thing. I knew I wanted the manual-wind version, the one closest to the original Moonwatch. It’s got that Hesalite crystal and that classic black dial. The thing about these Speedmasters is that they look smaller on the wrist than you’d think from the 42mm size.
The Hunt
I found a source that sold watches from original orders and started digging deeper. Each of these OMEGA watches has this unique 14-digit code, a product identification code, or PIC. For the Speedmaster, the first three digits are 311. Good to know if you’re ever on the hunt yourself. I confirmed the watch was the one that my friend wanted by checking the PIC carefully.
Tools of the Trade
Now, getting that case back open, that’s where things can get tricky. I’ve heard horror stories of people scratching up their watches trying to get them open. No thanks! So, I ordered a three-pronged opener online. Figured that was the safest bet. I didn’t want to mess this up. Then I waited for it to be delivered.
The Big Moment
Once I got all my tools together, and confirmed the watch was the right one. I took a deep breath and went for it. I carefully positioned the opener, made sure it was snug, and with a gentle twist, pop! The case back came right off. Success! Inside, everything looked good. Just like it should.
Mission Accomplished
It was a fun little project, and now I can say I’ve successfully opened up a Moonwatch replica. This one is going to a friend who will love it. It is a perfect gift. And I’ve got a new story to tell and new skill. Not too shabby for a regular day, right?
